Altered or uneven growth (asymmetry) of the breasts can be caused by many different reasons. This abnormality can be hereditary or can be acquired e.g. through inflammation, burns or it can have several causes. Such abnormalities can present a strong mental and physical burden for the women concerned. One example of a hereditary deformity is Poland's Syndrome. This involves disorders of the mammary gland and pectoral muscles, the skin and the integumentary structure and creates rib and hand deformities. It generally only affects one side of the body. Women with Poland's syndrome have one healthy and one under-developed or missing breast. In the so-called tuberous or tubular breast, the lower parts of the breast are also underdeveloped. This is often associated with over-sized areola and prolapsed glandular tissue in the areola. Another deformity of the breast is the so-called inverted nipple. Here, the most protruding part of the nipple is not pointed outwards but inwards. The nipple appears "pushed in". The corresponding surgical correction can be carried out as an outpatient under local or general anaesthetic.
